 Java Web Application Example: timesheet
=========================================

This example web application comes packaged with a WAR file (timesheet.war)
that can be dropped-into any Java Servlet 2.5 compliant servlet container.
The full source code is included as well.

INSTALLING

This example requires Java 5 and any servlet-2.5 container to run. I'll
show you how to install Sun's JDK and Apache Tomcat. While other Java
environments (OpenJDK, etc.) may work, there have been many reports that
things just don't go well when they are used. I highly recommend that
you use Sun's JDK.

Installing Sun's Java Development Kit
-------------------------------------

Download the Java 6 JDK from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp.
Note that you can skip the optional “registration” step. Remember, if you
are running a 32-bit kernel, download the 32-bit version. If you are
running 64-bit, you can choose either the 64-bit of 32-bit version. Run
the self-extracting script to install the JDK.

Installing Apache Tomcat
------------------------

Download Tomcat 6 "core" binary package from
http://tomcat.apache.org/download-60.cgi and unzip the archive.
That's it!

Installing MySQL Connector/J Database Driver
--------------------------------------------

Download MySQL Connector/J from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/
and install enclosed JAR file in Tomcat's "lib" subdirectory.

Installing the Web Application
------------------------------

Copy the timesheet.war file into Tomcat's "webapps" subdirectory.

Running Apache Tomcat
---------------------

Simply run Tomcat's bin/startup.sh or bin/startup.bat script as appropriate
for your environment.

You should be able to access the timesheet example by pointing your web
browser to http://localhost:8080/timesheet

If you have any problems running this example, please join the Apache Tomcat
mailing list. Instructions can be found at
http://tomcat.apache.org/lists.html#tomcat-users

COMPILING

You can build the webapp from source using the build.sh script
provided. Please check the variables defined at the beginning
of the script, specifically JAVA_HOME and TOMCAT_HOME. Just run
the script with no arguments and it'll build the WAR file for you
and place it into the build/ directory.

Enjoy, and good luck!
